Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the typewritten reminiscences of Carrie Usewick Harvey, of Wexford County, Michigan, as told to her daughter.

The reminiscences gave an account of the family's migration and settlement in Wexford County, and Carrie's recollections of her youth. They also describe early lumbering operations and homemade remedies for illness.

Biographical Note

Carrie Harvey's father, Dennis Usewick, was born in New York but later settled in Coldwater, Michigan, with his wife Harriett. In 1865, after serving in the Civil War, he moved his family north to what would become the city of Sherman, in Wexford County. When the Usewicks settled there it was a wilderness. Carrie married William Harvey, an English immigrant.
