Collection Summary:

“Over one year ago the Library acquired a fine collection of over 4000 titles on the C.P.U.S.A.  This acquisition had not been announced because the material was completely disorganized and some of it was brittle and needed repair.  The collection consists of works published by and about the Communist Party and its front organizations, books, pamphlets, newspapers and mimeographed reports.  One lot of material is the archive of an important party functionary, containing internal party materials dating from the late 1920’s to the early 1930’s.  This person was a director of various workers and training schools and his file includes items used in the Lenin Training School in Moscow, where English-speaking leaders of the Communist Parties were given instruction.  There are quite a few materials relating to activity in unions and the unemployment crisis, consisting in part of shop papers and regional party publications.  A rare item is a Questionnaire for Party Leaders and a colorful Foster item issued in a limited edition only for friends of the late William Z. Foster.  Included among the serials and The Call Magazine of 1917-18, issued on the eve of the formation of the CPUSA; Class Struggle, 1917-1919, a rare theoretical Marxian periodical edited by Fraina and Lore; Coastwise Unity, 1935-46, issued by the Communist Party Dock Unit; International Press Correspondence, 1929-1938, one of the most important single sources for the study of the documentary history of the Communist International and its parties in various countries; The Hearst Worker, 1936, published by the ‘Communist Party Nucleus in the Hearst Plant.’” (The University Library.  Michigan State University.  Number 15, September, 1961.)

Historical Background:

“The CPUSA was the most important American radical organization from its factionalized 1919 origins well into the 1950s.  Since that time, the Party has played a far more modest but not unimportant role within various social movements.  During its most dynamic periods, the CP guided a multitude of non-Party organizations and alliances with a far greater following and more impact than the Party proper.  At less auspicious times, the CP has isolated itself or, worse, expended most of its energies simply to survive government persecution.  Through good and bad times, the Party has had to combat the charge that its politics simply reflect directives passed down from Moscow.”  (“Communist Party, USA.”  Encyclopedia of the American Left.  Ed. Mari Jo Buhle, Paul Buhle, and Dan Georgakas.  1990.)
