Collection Summary:

This collection consists of materials developed for  an agricultural migrant worker safety program: “A presentation for the promotion of occupational safety and health of migrant farmworkers." Production of this presentation was sponsored by the Migrant and Bilingual Education Division, Department of Education, State of Michigan  via a contract with Michigan Economics for Human Development, Grand Ledge, Michigan. The materials in the collection include original notes and drafts of scripts for each slide program, 298 slides, 11 audio cassettes, news clippings, journal articles and pamphlets.

The following items were separated from the collection and cataloged for inclusion in the Michigan State University  Special Collections library holdings: Tierra o muerte : the land belongs to the people.  E184.M5 T5477 1970; El Humanismo de Marx en la Actualidad, by Raya Dunayevskaya, Detroit : News & Letters, HX21 .D86 1985.

Historical Background:

Joseph Spielberg Benitez (1936-2010) was born in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University Anthropology Department in 1965. He was a professor of Anthropology at Michigan State University. Spielberg taught and conducted research on Latin America and Mexican Americans.

Dr. Spielberg Benitz was instrumental in the development of Julian Samora Research Institute and served as one of its first senior faculty associates. Dr. Benitez retired as professor of Anthropology at Michigan State University and has published extensively on economic anthropology issues and on the social organization of Mexican American communities. He served as Chairman of the Governor's Agricultural Labor Commission and was a recipient of Fulbright-Hays Lecture/Research Fellowships to the University of Costa Rica and the University of Cusco in Peru. His field work was conducted in peasant and urban communities throughout Mexico and Guatemala.

Series II  Tatita Research
  Professor Spielberg was doing research for a book he planned on publishing on The Mexican messianic prophet named Pedro Rojas from the mid 1800’s.  Rojas, Also known as “Tatita”was from the state of Nuevo Leon in northern Mexico. Spielberg  transcribed several boxes of notes from the original, hard to read cursive handwriting for his research.  Some of the transcriptions are from files held at the Archivo Municipal de Guerrero  [Mexico].  Most of the numbered documents are from the Archivo Estatal de Nuevo Leon for which original box and folder numbers are not always provided.  Folders in the Spielberg collection have a contents description as provided.  Of particular note is Professor Spielbergs unpublished monograph manuscript on Tatita.
