Collection Summary:

2 boxes, 1955-2000. This archive contains handwritten drafts and published works written by Gilbert Salazar. Included are some of his original articles, book, essays, team journals, scorecards, event programs, tournament schedules as well as team and athlete photos.  Many of the news clippings are from El Renacimiento newspaper.  Four tournament trophies are also included as a small portion of this archive and are housed separately. This is part of the José F. Treviño Chicano Latino Activism Collections.

Historical Background:

Gilbert Salazar  (1936-2012) was a retired business owner and Lansing resident highly respected for his commitment to organizing, promoting and developing and participating in the Latin American League sports scene in the mid Michigan area.  Salazar was also a competitive sports person who participated in city and Latin American League Championship teams.  During the 1970-1989, Salazar was a sports journalist with a byline in El Renacimiento, Lansing’s longest printed community newspaper.  He spent a significant amount of time collecting the early years of Latino organized sports in the Lansing area (1950- 1969) and also photographing Lansing league and team play from the mid-1960’s to 2000.  Individual team sports such as boxing and wrestling were also a key interest. The Salazar materials were donated by Noé Hernandez and Gilbert Salazar Jr. in the fall of 2012. Hernandez was Gilbert Salazar Sr.’s co-author of Lansing’s Latin American Leagues: A History in the Making (2000).  This book used several of the pictures and articles from the donated materials. This is the only collection of Latino sports materials known of in Michigan.

Processing Note:

The Gilbert Salazar Papers were processed by Diana Rivera and Carolyn Schein, January - April of 2013.
