Scope and Contents

This collection contains two Civil War poems, "The Dying Soldier at Manassas" and "The Veteran's Growl." "The Veteran's Growl" was written by a soldier who was sent to Texas on garrison duty after the war ended. The author describes the miserable conditions in Texas and satirizes War Department policies and Union leaders.

Also included is a brief genealogy of the Lewis family.

Scope and Contents The Karl L. Rommel collection consists of photocopies of Civil War letters and documents. Correspondents include Harrison Traphagan, David R. Frego, Robert A. Moon, "Augustus", L. A. Hall, and "Robert". Harrison Traphagan enlisted in Company I, 3rd Michigan Cavalry on September 9, 1861 at age 21. Mustered in October 1861, his letters (1861-1862) mention daily army life and combat activity. Traphagan died of disease at New Madrid, Missouri on April 9, 1862. He was buried in the...

Scope and Contents This collection consists mainly of correspondence and other papers relating to the Stephen Scofield family of Ingham County, Michigan. Much of the correspondence relates to Grace Scofield Bridger (daughter of Stephen) and is mostly personal in content. Of special interest, however, are a letter (January 24, 1858) describing land and farming conditions in Wisconsin, and a letter (May 3, 1888) relating farming news and local market prices of farm produce in Kansas.
