Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of the papers of the Woodbury family including, John D. Woodbury, Chester D. Woodbury and Charles G. Woodbury.

The Capitol Savings and Loan folder contains correspondence, financial information, and promotional information about the bank. The Central Michigan Business College folder contains the Articles of Association.

The Correspondence folders contain letters between the Chester Woodbury family and the Charles Woodbury family. The majority of the letters are from Chester to Charles, however, a few are written by Charles, his wife Marion, May Woodbury, and Chester's mother. The letters contain information about happenings in the families, fatherly advice from Chester to Charles, household events, information about Chester's professional life, and information about the start up of Evelyn Orchards. Evelyn Orchards was located on South Pine Lake in Northern Michigan. One letter has brochures and advertisements for the Detroit Gas and Power Company.

The Edna Woodbury Estate folders contain documents relating to the settling of her estate. The Evelyn Orchard Photos file contains pictures of the lodge, groves, and views of the surrounding area. Some of the photos have captions. The Hagadorn Estate Exemption from Military Certificate file contains a certificate exempting Johnson Hagadorn from military service because of a "substitute furnished." The Eudora Hagadorn Estate folders contain documents relating to the settling of her estate, for which Chester Woodbury served as administrator.

The Land Papers folder contains land indentures, discharge of mortgages, assignment of mortgages, taxes paid on land, an abstract of title, and warranty deeds. The documents are related to land in Ionia, Crawford, and Roscommon Counties. The folder contains references to land in the city of Lansing including City of Lansing Lot 5, Block 63, Section 16, Township 4, North of Range 2W; Lot 76 of Englewood Park addition to the City of Lansing; N ½ of Lot 2 in Block 107 of the City of Lansing.

The Land Records folder contains indentures, discharge of mortgages, a State of Michigan Land Patent, warranty deeds, a mortgage, an executer's deed, an assignment of mortgage, and a state tax land deed. The documents in this folder were bound together with a ribbon labeled "Foote's Candy Shop 12 Strand Arcade of Lansing, Michigan."

The Lindberg Baby Kidnapping Notice folder contains a public notice of the reward for the capture of the kidnappers of Charles Lindbergh's son.

The M.A.C. Record folder contains a M.A.C. Record that contains an article on Charles Woodbury.

The Miscellaneous folder contains a "Hamill's Beautiful Inland Route" brochure telling about steamer service between Petoskey, Topinabee, and Mackinac Island, and a "Road Map of Southern Michigan." Also included, is a March 7, 1921 issue of The Washington Date-Line newspaper.

The Northern Michigan Lands folder contains correspondence about selling land and taxes, a state tax land deed, a quit claim deed. The documents relate to land in Negaunee, Roscommon, Marquette County, Presque Isle.

The Photographs file contains various photos of family homes, some of the photos have captions. The Reminiscences folder contains some of Charles's memories of his childhood and teenage years. The account has numbers in the margins that correspond with the pictures in the Reminiscences-Photographs folder. The Reminiscences-Fun of a River Trip folder contains a description about taking a fishing and camping trip. The account contains photos and captions. Some photos were falling away from the paper. They were assigned by the archivist in brackets number that corresponds with the place the photo was on the page and put into a Reminiscences-Fun of a River Trip-Photographs folder. A photocopy of the page shows their original location on the page. The Reminiscences-The Fun of a River Trip Photographs and Captions folder contains "legends for prints" that Chester used in his account. Also included are some copies of photos that were used in the full account. The Roaring Brook Resort folder contains articles of incorporation, correspondence, and a land contract.

The Oversized folder contains two plat maps of Roaring Brook Resort, and a "Summer Resort Section" map showing railroad lines, it has been hand labeled with the location of Evelyn Orchard and various fishing spots. Charles G. Woodbury's diplomas from Michigan Agricultural College are also included in the collection.

The Material Specific Details note contains a list of section and township numbers and county and township names for the lands referred to in the land folders.
