Papers, 1938 - 1975
Scope and Contents
The Edward E. Kinney papers consist of five items, including letter of recommendation for E. E. Kinney to the Michigan State Board of Registration, a letter from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company, one letter to Kinney from a Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) graduate and one from a former colleague at M.A.C., and a 1948 magazine article about the school of Electrical Engineering at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in which Kinney is mentioned.
The letter addressed to Kinney from the Denver and Rio Grand Western Railroad Co. provides historical information on construction of railroads west of the Continental Divide, including the Denver and Salt Lake Railway; the Burlington and Colorado R.R.; the Colorado R.R.; and the Denver, Northwestern and Pacific R.R. The letter contains details on the history of the Moffatt Tunnel, a railroad tunnel built across the Continental Divide; and Kinney Creek which was named for Edward C. Kinney, a great-uncle of Edward E. Kinney.
The letters discuss the careers of the correspondents after leaving Michigan Agricultural College. R. D. Wyckoff (class of 1920) was a "ham" radio operator while attending M.A.C.'s School of Engineering. His letter includes a description of the radio equipment that was available on campus prior to the establishment of WKAR, the university's public radio station.
Wylie B. Wendt was an assistant professor of Civil Engineering at M.A.C.from 1906 to 1915. After leaving M.A.C., he taught at Kansas State University and South Dakota School of Mines before becoming head of the Civil Engineering Department of the Speed Scientific School in Louisville, Kentucky in 1925. Besides chronicling his teaching career, Wendt recalls his active role in Freemasonry and the Knights Templar in East Lansing. This letter mentions H. K. Vetter, M.A.C. faculty member and Past Commander of the Lansing Commandary of Knights Templar, and E. P. Kinney, the father of Edward E. Kinney.
The collection also contains two photographs, both of the Minerallac Electric Company store front and inside of the shop.
