Scope and Contents
The Highway Traffic Safety Programs records include reports, booklets, magazines, correspondence, and news releases pertaining to driver education, highway improvements, and highway safety programs including vehicle inspection and breathalyzer use. The collection also includes photos of driver education, driving simulators, road courses, research, breathalyzer use, a teen game show tournament, conference groups, Allstate insurance company giving checks, staff and the Highway Traffic program library. The folders are labeled according to Highway Traffic Safety Program classifications system. An index to the system can be found in the folder titled "Historic Photos [and index lists]." The driver education photos show groups including teens, women and nuns.
Also included is the report "A Method of the Evaluation of the Quality of the Traffic Flow Based on Safety, Convenience, and Economy Combined" by Frank DeRose. It was produced in 1958 in the Highway Traffic Safety Center. The report analyzes the monetary value of quality of flow, time as the basis for computing the value of convenience, and operation costs of the vehicle as the basis for the value of economy.
The collection also includes published (1956-57) and unpublished (1956-1970) annual reports and serial #193, MSU Center Letter.
