Oral History This collection is an oral history of hardwood logging in and around Benzie County, Michigan from 1890 to 1920. A good description of the work and life of loggers, cooks, and other employees of logging camps in Northern Michigan was obtained through taped interviews with the following people:

All taped interviews but two (with Mrs. Bargerstock and Lillian Sibbit) have been edited, transcribed and a brief description of each one is listed below. Along with these is an introductory article giving a general outline of the lumbering situation at that time. Copies of the original tapes are included.

Photographs The collection also contains copies of photographs from various sources. The majority of the copies were made by taking a photograph of an original photograph. The MSU Archives does not have copyright to the copies or originals.

The photographs include images of lumbering in Michigan, lumbering camps, and people involved with lumbering. Counties include Antrim County, Benzie County, Genesee County, Grand Traverse County, Iron County, Kalkaska County, Leelanau County, Manistee County, and Wexford County.

Michigan towns and places include Aral, Arcadia, Arcadia Lake, Averytown, Bear Lake, Beaver Island, Beulah, Benton Harbor, Benzonia, Betsie River, Cadillac, Carter’s Siding, Cedar River, Chase, Cheboygan, Copemish, Crescent, Crystal City, Crystal Lake, Duck Lake, East Jordon, Edgewater, Elberta, Empire Junction, Frankfort, Happy Valley, Homestead, Honor, Inland, Kenneth, Kenton, Lake Ann, Lakewood, Mandona, Manistee, Nessen City, North Manitou, Norwegian Town, O’Neil, Pearl Lake, Platte Lake, Point Betsie, Spencer, Sugar Bush, Thompsonville, Traverse City, Turtle Lake, Wallin, and Water.

In addition there are images of schools, railroads, towns, steam ships, and towns that are related to the lumbering areas in Michigan. There are also images of California lumbering including Sharta County, as well as few images of lumbering in Washington including Cascades, Puget Sound, Seattle, and Fort Ludlow.

Collection is open for research. Photocopying of an entire interview is not allowed (donor restriction).
