Letters, 1831 - 1851
Scope and Contents
This collections consists of letters addressed to Jacob J. Wagner of Monongalia County, Virginia and LePorte, Indiana. Monongalia County is now part of West Virginia. Two letters (1831, 1833), written by friends in Indiana while Wagner still lived in Virginia, describe travel conditions, pioneer life, weather and the abundance of agricultural produce in Indiana. Three letters (1840, 1850, 1851) were written by Wagner's friends in Virginia after he left, giving him news of that area. These letters mention crop prices, results of political elections, real estate values, and progress in the building of railroads, bridges and turnpikes in Virginia.
