Volume 1, Ledger, circa 1863 - 1872
Scope and Contents
This collection contains business and personal correspondence, various bulletins, papers, and advertisements of the Rosevelt family.
Most of the business papers involve John V. Rosevelt, a dealer in agricultural machinery, and Charles Rosevelt, a farmer, both of Keeler (Van Buren County), Michigan. The personal correspondence in the collection involves several individuals: Elizabeth Hirkham, Emma Varnovery, and Allie, possibly Charles' wife.
Additionally, the collection includes advertisements for new products, the Kirtland family record of deaths and births, a Union ticket announcing Abraham Lincoln for President, proof of insurance papers, railroad passes, papers for guardianship of a child, numerous marriage and anniversary announcements, party invitations, the will of John Cagney, and Michigan State College's Horticulture Department Bulletin, 1895.
Also included in the collection are four account books, circa 1850-1880, probably belonging to Charles Rosevelt containing business notes recording the sale of farm products as well as personal notes, and two large diaries (shelved separately) of Charles Rosevelt, 1878-1886 and 1892-1894, giving details of farm work and including a few accounts.
Additionally there is a booklet entitled "Lily of the Valley," a child's storybook, an Almanac for 1879, and a speech on American labor by the Hon. Byron M. Cutcheon, given in the House of Representatives in 1884.
