Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection consists of one copy of the final report, titled, An Historical Overview of Redwood Logging Resources within the Hume Lake Ranger District, Sequoia National Forest, California. The final report was written by Marley R. Brown, III, Principle Investigator and C. Michael Elling, Research Assistant at the Anthropological Studies Center, a Cultural Resources Facility at the Academic Foundation, Inc. at Sonoma State University. The final report is 207 pages and was published in May 1981. The final report was prepared under the U.S. Forest Service; contract No. 40-9A23-0-1449; "Redwood Logging Research on the Hume Lake Ranger District"; U.S. Department of Agriculture; Sequoia National Forest, Porterville, California.

The final report is an historical overview of the redwood lumber areas of the Hume Lake Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest. Additional topics in the final report include: the history of settlement in the region and a chronology of three phases of logging in the region between 1860 and the 1920s. The primary information from the report is from primary, secondary, and oral sources. The information is represented analytically based on a 'problem-orientated research design' and the report makes future management suggestions for 'resource protection', 'data recovery', 'site maintenance', and 'interpretive strategies' for the region.

The text of the final report is supplemented by three types of graphical representations: (1) 7 maps on topics: of the logging areas in the Sequoia National Forest, fossil sites, worldwide distribution of redwoods - past and present, and historical lumber companies; (2) 8 lists of tables on topics: geologic time scale, sierra redwood groves in the Hume Lake Ranger District, phases of Hume Lake Ranger District, and typologies of Redwood Logging Remains; and (3) 22 figures on topics: logging methods, Mills, and railroad grades.

The report has been removed from its original binding and segmented into folders.
