Athletes, 1940 - 1944
Scope and Contents
This collection contains one program, one poster, 151 photographs (147 regular plus 4 oversize), and 25 postcards dealing with Michigan State University history collected by Larry Bielat. The photographs contain many individual photographs of athletes from 1929-1944. There are also many early photographs of the football team and a variety of pictures from the marching band spanning over thirty years. Of special interest are several photographs of MSU football coach Muddy Waters (1980-1982), including an oversized photo of Waters with his coaching staff. Some of the photographs were used in the book Spartan Football: 100 Seasons of Gridiron Glory, which Bielat co-wrote with Ken Hammond. The postcards fall between the years 1906 and 1910 and show a wide variety of campus life including the annual circus, the class tug-of-war, and individuals from the baseball, football, track and field, and basketball teams.
Also included are correspondence and a Friends of Frim appreciation dinner program. The correspondence contains several letters either to George Alderton or from him, one of the letters is from John Hannah; another from Jim Hasselman. None of the letters were written by Bielat. Some of the letters from Alderton consist of reminisces of his work.
