Scope and Content

This collection contains documents, articles, correspondence and photographs from Mr. D'Itri's time studying mercury pollution and the impacts it can have on human beings. Most of the documents focus on mercury pollution in the rivers and lakes of northern Ontario in the 1970's and 80's, and the extreme health effects it had on the underpriviliedged Native American populations that were disporportionally affected. Through these documents, it is clear that he and many other academics made strong associations between the outbreak of mercury poisoning in Canada with a previous outbreak in Minamata Japan in the mid 1950's. This collection is mostly comprised of documents related to one or both of the outbreaks in Japan and Canada, but includes a 1993 report on mercury pollution in Michigan.

The collection includes numerious photographs as well, mostly from a gathering of Native American victims of the Canadian outbreak with survivors and experts from the Japanese outbreak.
