Correspondence, 1874, 1892, 1913
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters, accounts books, and miscellaneous bills and receipts of the Andre and Hurlbert families. Most of the letters, written in 1874, are from Samuel to Elizabeth as he traveled through Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska as an itinerant farm worker. The bills and receipts are primarily from general stores, showing goods purchased, the prices paid, and eggs and dairy products accepted in trade. There are also accounts showing farm work performed; it is not clear who kept these accounts. In addition, a partial ledger contains accounts for the Andre and Spaulding general store (1879-1880), as well as Elizabeth Hurlbert's personal accounts and her accounts as guardian (1885-1888). Finally, there are several small account books kept by A.J. and Elizabeth Hurlbert. A.J. used his for farm accounts (1882-1889), while Elizabeth recorded household expenses and rent from boarders.
