The collection consists of the papers of Dr. Clifton R. Wharton, Jr. and his wife, Dolores D. Wharton, and includes materials covering both their professional and personal lives. The collection also includes geneological materials bor both.

Biographical / Historical

The Presidential Commission on World Hunger was established by President Jimmy Carter September 5, 1978. The charge of the Commission was to identify and investigate the cause, nature and pervasivness of hunger in the United States and the world. They were also ask to review existing aid programs and make recommendations toward creating a coherent national policy designed to reduce hunger world-wide. This Commission was was comprised of twenty-members, sixteen of which were appointed directly by the President. The chairman of the commission was Sol Linowitz, Chairman of Xerox International and U.S. diplomat. Clifton Wharton served as a member of the the Commission.
