Historical Note

The Knight Commission was formed in 1989 by John S. and James L. Knight "to promote reforms that support and strengthen the educational mission of college sports" (source: www.knightcommission.org). Dr. Wharton was a long-time member of the Commission starting in 1989. He served as co-chair for the Commission from May 2006 to April 2007.
