Scope and Contents

These papers reflect Dr. Wharton’s participation in the Presidential mission to Latin America. They include background information about each country visited as well as the final report generated after the mission was completed. There are reports from each country supplied to the mission for informational purposes. These reports are written in Spanish and French. There are drafts of the final report, and the final report of the mission in this series. Accompanying the final report are newspaper reviews and articles about the mission and its effects on Latin American policy.

Biographical / Historical

President Nixon established this mission to Latin America to assess the economic situation of Central, and South America, and the Caribbean nations. Nelson Rockefeller was selected by Nixon (possibly after some lobbying by Rockefeller) to head the mission. Rockefeller had business interests in Latin America.

Dr. Wharton was asked by Rockefeller to accompany the mission to Latin America. Dr. Wharton’s expertise would lend to evaluation of agriculture programs in each country. There are several reports, provided by the governments all having to do with agricultural production and impact on economies. Dr. Wharton helped write the final report; A copy of which is included in this series.
