MSC Football Team Goes to Washington, D.C., 1930

Item — Reel: MSC Football Goes to Washington, D.C.

Scope and Contents

The Michigan State College (MSC) football team of 1930 travels from East Lansing to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown in the Spartans' first night game in their history. Team members are seen enjoying themselves in the windows of the Roosevelt Hotel, and witnessing a memorial wreath being laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The MSC Military Band and ROTC Band, under the direction of Leonard Falcone, accompanies the team to Washington and performs for President Herbert Hoover on the lawn of the Capitol. Because the game was at night, it is not included in the film. Injured team captain Harold Smead is seen in his wheelchair smiling for the camera, and MSC coaches "Sleepy" Jim Crowley and Glenn "Judge" Carberry discuss the 1931 re-match after their 14-13 loss.
