Biographical / Historical
The Board for International Food and Agriculture Development (BIFAD) was established in 1976 to facilitate the policies of Title XII, enacted by the Congressional legislation in 1975. (Title XII-1975 was an amendment of the Title XII - Foreign Assistance Act of 1961). BIFAD's (ongoing) charge is to utilize the application of science as a means to solve food and nutrition problems of developing countries. This includes supporting research, providing technical assistance, providing funding, when available, for assistance and involving U.S. universities in a network dedicated to advancing agricultural science. BIFAD has many partners, associates, and committees including the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID), the apppx. 140 member university network (including Michigan State University), the Joint Research Committee (JRC), and the Joint Committee for Agricultural Research and Development (JCARD). Clifton Wharton was a prominent member of BIFAD, and served as its chairman from its founding through 1983.
