Historical Note

The Fund for Corporate Initiatives (FCI) was a foundation established by Dolores D. Wharton in September 1980 with the goal of advancing "the upward mobility of minorities and women in the coporate world" (A Multicultured Life, page 183). FCI's first initiative was a summer internship program which placed undergraduate business students in the Albany, New York area with local companies, and provided weekend seminars led by FCI professionals.

FCI later partnered with the Aspen Institute (Queenstown, Maryland) to create the Young Executive Program (YEP). YEP's goals were "to prepare mid-level, high-potential corporate minorities and women under age thirty for leadership at the highest levels of corporate management and policy-making, and to give corporate sponsors a unique opportunity to invest in the future of their most promising young executives" (page 187).

FCI's third initiative was the FCI Fellows Program for alumni of the YEP. The Fellows program helped alumni share their expertise and experience while growing their professional networks. They also took part in conferences hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC, adn a "Dialogue on Diversity" hosted by the Committee for Economic Development (CED) in May 1999.

FCI was dissolved in 2001 having assisted over 200 young executives during its 21 year history.
