Scope and Contents

The Charles Schmitter collection contains personal papers, materials relating to the Michigan State University fencing team, files relating to MSU in general and subject files. The personal papers contain correspondence, articles about Schmitter, and articles written by Schmitter. There is also correspondence and lists related to his collection of fencing books, which now reside in the Special Collections Department at the MSU Library. The records about MSU fencing include scores, scheduling, articles about the teams, team media guides, team lists, and equipment orders. The general MSU material includes athletic and physical education department materials, curriculum, material about the intramural building and activities, reports written by faculty, and a file about the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization. Subject files include Amateur Fencers League of America material, Big Ten and NCAA material relating to fencing. There is also material relating to fencing training including reports, articles, and serials. Serial titles include the Amateur Swordsman (1948 -1950), American Fencing (1949-1983), the Fencer (1948), Fencing, La Touche newsletter (1972), the Riposte (1937, 1940), Scherma (1956-1960), and Sword and Racquet magazine (1932). There is also material relating to the National Fencing Coaches Association and the United States Olympic Committee. The collection also includes photographs of Schmitter, MSU fencing teams, fencers, Air Corps Technical Fencing School, Johnnie Melise and the Blue Moon Collegian music group, martial arts in other countries, and swords.
