Scope and Contents

These papers contain the diaries of Fred T. Henson from 1907 to 1969. Henson was a farmer in Richland Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. The diary entries cover his daily activities, the weather, chemicals used on crops, his wife Gladys' activities, genealogical data on Kalamazoo County residents, obituaries, and wedding announcements. Henson also describes his service days in World War I, including a stay in East Lansing, Michigan where he was a member of the Michigan Agricultural College Training Detachment. He also served as Richland Township treasurer, kept notes on tax payments, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Richland School District for a number of years.

Alumni rolls (1900-1939) and commencement programs (1940-1944) are included. Also in the papers are income tax books, a number of account books of farm and household expenses of Henson's farm and his gas engine repair business, and accounts of his father Thomas' farm. Farm business reports of the Michigan State University Farm Management Department (1930-1934) and a newspaper clipping (1949) concerning a retired teacher are also included.

Biographical / Historical

Fred T. Henson was born on January 22, 1887 in Barry County, Michigan. He was a farmer in Richland Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Henson served in World War I, which include a stay in East Lansing, Michigan where he was a member of the Michigan Agricultural College Training Detachment. He married Gladys Reed on November 20, 1920. He also served as Richland Township treasurer and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Richland School District for a number of years. Henson died on July 25, 1970.
