Biographical Note

John R. Hildebrand was a tenure track faculty member in the Department of Social Science at Michigan State University. In 1969, the University did not renew his contract. Hildebrand sued the University for reinstatement and punitive damages, alleging the University violated his constitutional rights, stating that the actual reason for his dismissal was his involvement in faculty labor groups. In 1970, Hildebrand lost his suit. With the backing of the American Association of University Professors, Hildebrand appealed this decision. In 1977, he lost the appeal.
