Historical Note
The Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society was founded in 1886 at Cornell University, with the intention of remaining devoted to all forms of science and engineering, and reward excellence in scientific research. The society expanded as chapters were established at universities around the country, and later the world, many of whom adopted programs extending beyond scientific debate. Of the chapters created throughout the United States, Michigan State College adopted their own chapter of the Sigma Xi Society in 1927. The installation process included a procession across campus led by national society leaders to the library where they held a ceremony in the Graduate Study Room. The Michigan State Chapter has been active since its inception in 1927, with professors and students alike involved in its scientific endeavors. Even today, membership in the Sigma Xi Society is by invitation only and requires nomination by two current members. Since its creation, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society has remained heavily involved in scientific issues, conducting research, developing agendas, and offering guidance. Today the society has approximately 60,000 members from over 500 chapters within the United States and around the world.
