Scope and Contents

This collection consists of letters and campaign materials requested from five Michigan Congressmen by Frank Elliott of the Michigan State University Museum. The five Congressmen represented are Gerald Ford, Clare Hoffman, Donald Hayworth, John Lesinski, and James O'Hara. Their letters and campaign materials discuss the major issues and concerns of the 1958 and 1960 elections.

Biographical Note

Frank N. Elliott was born March 18, 1926 in Dunkirk, New York. In May 1956, he was hired as Curator of History at the Michigan State University Museum, and assistant professor in the Department of History. He earned a B.A. from Alfred University in New York (1949), a M.A. from Ohio University (1950), and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (circa 1956). After resigning from MSU in 1961, Elliott was appointed associate dean of the School of General Studies at Columbia University, the director of the Division of Arts and Sciences at State University of New York at Cortland, and the vice president at Hofstra University (Long Island, New York). From 1969 to 1990, Elliott served as president of Rider University, located in Lawrence Township, New Jersey.

Elliott was married to Mary Elizabeth Neish, with whom he had two daughters, Susan and Ann, and one son, Robert. He died September 24, 2015.
