Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the papers of C. H. Hardy and his descendants. C. H. Hardy, of Tipton, Michigan, owned a celery farm and had a shipping business in poultry, pork, and calves. His papers (1867-1910) contain receipts, shipping records, invoices, account books, business advertisements, and a stock certificate.

Charles O. Hardy, of Adrian, Michigan, attended Brown's Business University in Adrian, graduating in 1905. His papers consist of a copy of his college yearbook, "The Brown Budget", and an enrollment document.

Laurence D. Hardy, son of Charles O. and Irene E. Hardy, attended Michigan State College (now Michigan State University), graduating in 1943. He and a fellow student, Charles T. Foo, sought employment in China in 1942 though the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. The collection includes their joint application and resume containing photographs and biographical information.

The collection also contains a handwritten book of recipes.

Biographical Note

C. H. Hardy, of Tipton, Michigan, was born circa 1841 to Ira and Susan Hardy. He had one son with his first wife, Mary Matilda Slater (1842 – July 25, 1882), named Alonzo Palmer Hardy (February 2, 1863 – December 20, 1939). Following the death of his first wife, he married Caroline “Carrie” Martin (April 28, 1867 – September 21, 1945) circa 1887. Together they had three children, Nora Blanche (May 21, 1887 – January 13, 1955), Charles Osgood (November 25, 1888 – August 7, 1959), and Ralph (August 5, 1891 – May 30, 1964). The Hardys owned a celery farm and had a shipping business in poultry, pork, and calves.

Charles Osgood Hardy, of Adrian, Michigan, was born to C. H. and Carrie Hardy on November 25, 1888. He attended Brown's Business University in Adrian, graduating in 1905. On August 22, 1915, he married Irene E. “June” Driscoll (1886-1971). They had one son, Lawrence D. Hardy (October 9, 1916 – December 1979). Charles died August 7, 1959.

Laurence D. Hardy, son of Charles O. and Irene E. Hardy, was born October 9, 1916. He attended Michigan State College, graduating in 1943, with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts. According to his draft card and a November 24, 1946 Lansing State Journal article, he was employed by the Michigan State College Division of Liberal Arts. On January 25, 1958, he married Elizabeth L. “Betty” Roscoe (March 5, 1922 – April 1971) in Los Angeles, California. He died on December 29, 1979.

Charles Thompkins Foo was born April 22, 1918 in St. Johns, Michigan to Charles T. and Rose Foo. His father, a physician, was a native of China; his mother was born in Harrisville, Michigan and raised in Detroit. He had three younger siblings, Sui L., Wellington Ming, and Mei Lui. Foo attended Michigan State College, graduating with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts in 1942. During college, he was the graduate manager of the State News, and a Lieutenant Colonel in the ROTC. After graduation, Foo enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was discharged in May 29, 1946 and reenlisted on June 27, 1951. He then worked in public relations for the Michigan Tuberculosis Association. According to his obituary in the Honolulu Advertiser (October 2, 1987), Foo was a retired information officer for the U.S. Foreign Service, and a retired major in the U.S. Army. He was married to Lorna L. Foo (June 23, 1928 - November 22, 1997), and had two sons, Mark and Wayne, and one daughter, Sharlyn Wagner. Foo died on September 29, 1987.
