Scope and Content

The records of the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) include policy codes, meeting minutes, agendas, proposals, reports, correspondence with campus and other universities' departments and officials, materials relating to ASMSU presidents, handbooks, news clippings, fact sheets, press bulletins, and scrapbooks. Topics of interest in the records include People’s Park, women’s curfew for dormitories, Women’s Inter-Residence Council, Men’s Hall Association, student protests and demonstrations, Students for a Democratic Society, Students for an Alternative Candidate, reactions to MSU policy, student government, Big Ten Students Association, Rose Bowls (1954, 1956, 1966), the National Student Association, and Pop Entertainment and Showcase Jazz concerts featuring Weather Report, Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock. Also included are two audio cassettes of the student council orientation from 1986.

Also included are slides of 1978 ASMSU activities taken by Lynda Loomis, ASMSU Media relations. Images include ASMSU members meeting, ASMSU offices, fraternity and sorority houses, and the Lamda Chi Alpha races. There are also images of the State News, dorm workers, East Lansing Court and East Lansing City Hall, Pop Entertainment offices, Mariah, Black Notes, Legislative Relations, Legal Services, ASMSU secretary, Student Board, Office of Black Affairs, Jazz Showcase, Video Workshop, Business Office, Gay/Lesbian office, and ASMSU President Daniel Jones and MSU President Edgar Harden meeting. The collection also includes Pop Entertainment and Showcase Jazz posters.

Historical Note

Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) was created in 1965 by the presidents of the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, Men's Hall Association, Women's Inter-residence Council, Off-Campus Council, University Apartments, Resident's Council, and Inter-Cooperative Council. It became the governing body of the undergraduate student body replacing the All University Student Government (AUSG) when ASMSU joined with the Council of Graduate Students (COGS).
