Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a copy of the publication "Chicanas: Their Voices, Their Lives," edited by Lucia Fox-Lockert and illustrated by Nora Chapa Mendoza. The Michigan State Board of Education published the booklet in 1988. The publication functions as an oral history of ten Chicana women who have been through hard events during the course of their lives. "The profiles contained herein are candid poetic expressions of the life experiences of ten Chicana women," (Foreword, p. v). Also included are newspaper clippings, correspondence, and memos about the debate on whether or not to include creationism in the K-12 curriculum in Michigan. As a member of the State Board of Education, Salas sponsored motions to ban the teaching of Biblical theory.
