Scope and Contents

The collection contains copy number 13 of Olive Butterfield Mosher's two volume autobiography which was compiled in 1988 by her nephew, Ira William Butterfield. Volume I contains copies of her published work "A Forest Fire" from the periodical, Good Old Days, and writings from the Burcham Hills Memory Book. There is also a typescript entitled “Lost in a Swamp.” Parts III through VI are photocopied from Olive Mosher’s various manuscripts and journals and are handwritten. These include personal stories, poems and photographs. Volume II is photocopied from handwritten sources and begins with Part VII, Rhymes and Verses. Part VIII is a journal pertaining to Olive Mosher’s 1916 Eastern Trip. Photographs are also included in this volume. Appendix A contains letters that were received and retained by the author while appendix B contains genealogical information on the author’s family. This includes notes on the Banks, McCloy, Mosher and Butterfield families taken from various sources. Photos of Kenyon Leech Butterfield, cousin to Olive and past President of Michigan Agricultural College, are included. An index can be found at the end of both volumes.

Biographical Note

Olive Lyle Butterfield Mosher was born in 1896 to George Washington Butterfield and his wife, Alice Banks Butterfield. She published in the periodical Good Old Days and in the Burcham Hills Memory Book which was part of the “Life Writing Project” conducted by the Department of English at Michigan State University. She was married to Jesse K. Mosher in 1920 and had two children, Alice Mae Lovdy Mosher Montney and Carol Claire Mosher Banta. She died in 1984.
