Historical Note

The Department of Education was created at the Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in August 1924. In 1945, it became the Division of Education. From 1953 to 1954, it was known as the School of Education. On July 1, 1954, the Department of Teacher Education was one of the five new administrative branches introduced to the School. Its purpose was for planning and coordinating students’ programs and directing student teaching and other laboratory experiences for prospective teachers. In 1956, the Division of Education became known as the College of Education. The Student Teaching Office began within the College of Education, circa 1962. W. Henry Kennedy became the Director of Student Teaching in 1964 until his retirement in 1988. In 1976, the Student Teaching Office became the Student Teaching and Professional Development Office. In September 1981, the Department of Elementary and Special Education and the School of Teacher Education including the Division of Teacher Education and Professional Development became the Department of Teacher Education.
