Historical Note
In 1963 the Department of Romance Languages along with the Department of German and Russian and the Department of Linguistics and Oriental and African Languages were created in the College of Arts and Letters. Prior to that languages had been taught in the Department of Foreign Language. In 1976 it was renamed the Department of Romance and Classical Language. In 2003 it was renamed the the Department of French, Classics, and Italian. The department consists of programs in Classical Studies, French, and French Language & Literature.
