Historical Note
In 1959, the Student Teacher Experimental Program (STEP) started with a Ford Foundation grant. This program sought to tie teacher education more closely to communities through partnerships with junior colleges in rural areas. Courses were taught by the College of Education faculty. The program began with 18 students and grew to 421 by 1963. The grant money ended in 1964 and the program went on to be known as the Elementary Intern Program (EIP).
