Historical Note
The Jewish Studies Program was created in 1992, expanding on courses that were already present and a “Jewish Studies Thematic that existed at Michigan State University (MSU) since the mid-1970s.” The Jewish Studies Program works with four colleges and eight departments at MSU. It has grown through numerous gifts and endowments thereby increasing the curricular offerings and activities. The mission of this program is to “provide an enriching university environment of academic learning” about the “rich traditions, history, society, culture, and religious thought and practice of the Jewish people” for both Jews and non-Jews. In September 2018, the program was renamed the Michael and Elaine Serling Institute for Jewish Studies and Modern Israel.
