Biographical Note
John Newton Winburne, II, was born on February 28, 1911 in Morrilton, Arkansas. He earned a B.A. in 1934 and a M.A. in 1937, both from the University of Colorado. Winburne earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1951. He married Elinore McNichol and had twins: John Newton, III, and Elinore II. Winburne served with the American Red Cross in Italy and Africa from 1943-1945. He joined the faculty at Michigan State in 1945 as assistant professor in the Department of Written and Spoken English. He retired in 1974 as associate dean and professor emeritus from University College and the Department of American Thought and Language. Winburne died on January 3, 1983.
