Biographical Note

John C. Howell (born 1928) received his B.A. in 1951 and M.A. in 1952 from Texas Christian University and his Ph.D. from Duke in 1958. Howell joined the faculty as an assistant professor in the department of sociology at Michigan State University. His primary fields of interest were social organization and administration.

In 1964, Howell was appointed assistant dean in the College of Social Science. In this position he was responsible for reorganizing the curriculum.

In 1965, Howell was also appointed associate dean in the College of Human Medicine. Here, too, he was largely responsible for curriculum development.

Howell moved to the Office of the Provost as assistant provost for health programs in 1973 from which he took a year leave in 1981, and then retired.

Series Description

(1) Social Science 1 cu. ft. Material dealing with the College of Social Science itself. Included is material such as the college curriculum committee, correspondence with the Dean and various reports. Arranged alphabetically.

(2) Sociology 3.5 cu. ft.

Material concerned with the Sociology Department and Curriculum Committee, Sociology course tests and syllabus, Academic Council minutes, and correspondence. Also contained are articles and proposals of various kinds. Arranged alphabetically.

(3) University 1.0 cu. ft.

Material from Howell's position on various university committees. Included are papers from the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities and the Academic Council. Arranged alphabetically.
