Scope and Contents

This collection consists of Civil War letters written by Jesse Taft to his family during his service in the 9th Michigan Cavalry. Taft served in Kentucky and Tennessee, and with Sherman's command in Georgia and the Carolinas.

Biographical Note

Jesse Taft was born circa 1818 in New York. He enlisted as a Private on 1 December 1862 at Algansee, Michigan. He then enlisted in Company C, Michigan 9th Cavalry Regiment on 22 January 1863. Taft was mustered out on 21 July 1865 at Lexington, NC.

He was married to Mary Taft. Jesse Taft died circa 1874.
