Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials created by Michigan State University Sports Information Office related to women’s sports at MSU. The records include media guides, schedules, and season outlooks for basketball, golf, gymnastics, swimming and diving, track, and volleyball. Also included are two programs from women’s sports banquets held in 1983 and 1985.

Historical Note
The Women’s Athletic Association was established in 1924, which included field hockey, tennis, rifle, basketball, volleyball, swimming, fencing and soccer. In 1972, women's sports were expanded due to Title IX. Women student athletes began to be awarded varsity letters in 1980. Now, women’s varsity sports include basketball, crew, cross-country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Women's athletics were officially incorporated into the Big Ten Conference in 1981-1982.
