The Women’s Athletic Association was established in 1924, which included field hockey, tennis, rifle, basketball, volleyball, swimming, fencing and soccer. Due to Title IX in 1972, women’s sports expanded greatly and in 1980 women were awarded varsity letters. Now, women’s varsity sports include basketball, crew, cross-country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Women's athletics were officially incorporated into the Big Ten Conference in 1981-1982.
