Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials relating to the drafting of Chapters VI-XII of the "Statues, Rules, and Regulations of the University," 1971-1972. Also included is correspondence relating to this project which Waite headed.

In addition, the collection includes reports, outlines, memorandums and correspondence regarding a study of the Art department done in 1968-1969 while Waite was assistant dean in the College of Arts and Letters. Studies of academic departments were an objective of Michigan State University's Educational Development Program which was initiated in 1963 to "reshape the university."

Biographical Note

John A. Waite was born in Denver, Colorado on April 15, 1915. He received a Bachelor's degree in 1936 and a Master's degree in 1937, both from the University of Colorado and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1950.

Waite was hired at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1946 to teach English. Waite served on the Educational Development Program and also served as the Assistant Dean in the College of Arts and Letters. He retired as professor emeritus in 1973.

John A. Waite was married to Esther Buchanan with whom he had one son, John Nicholas Waite. On July 13, 1983 John A. Waite died at the age of 68.
