Scope and Content

The Edward G. Read papers contain materials related to Read, his wife, children, and relatives. Included are personal and business correspondence, recipe books, pamphlets, cards, and publications. The family papers series has a four volume set titled The Peak - Peake Family History by Cyrus Peak. The photographs include the Barber, Shepard, Read, and Peak families, as well as unidentified people and an aerial view of a farm.

Biographical Note

Edward G. Read was born on September 3, 1864 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He attended Kalamazoo College and Parsons' Business College of Kalamazoo. From a young age he managed the family farm and raised prize winning sheep. He was the director of the Kalamazoo Savings Bank and several other Michigan businesses. Read was a member of the House of Representatives for Kalamazoo County second district, circa 1920. Edward married Ruby Chandler on November 14, 1894. Ruby, born December 30, 1870, was the daughter of Adeline and David Chandler. Edward and Ruby Read had six children George Sherman (1896-1969), Adeline (1897-1897), Edward George, Jr. (1898-1969), David (1903-1904), Howard Peake (1905-1906), and Caroline (1907-1975). Edward G. Read died May 4, 1932. Ruby Chandler Read died June 27, 1953.

Carrie Elsie Read was born March 1870. She was the sister of Edward G. Read. In 1900, she was living in Ypsilanti, Michigan and attending school (possibly the Michigan State Normal School). According to the 1920 U.S. Census, Carrie lived in Richland, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, with her sister Mattie. Carrie was employed as a school teacher. She died June 3, 1922 in Kalamazoo.
