Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photographic negatives of Michigan geological features taken by L. Claire Hubert, on behalf of the Michigan Geological Survey. Listed on each negative sleeve is the type of geological feature, location (often including range numbers), the photographer (Hulbert), and the date taken. Some negative sleeves have additional information. There are also a few photographic prints in the collection.

Biographical Note

Lloyd C. Hulbert was born June 27, 1918 in Lapeer, Michigan. He attended Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) and graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Conservation. In the mid-1940s, Hulbert worked for the U.S. Forest Service in range reseeding research in Montana and as an active "smoke jumper" (forest firefighter who parachutes into remote areas). He returned to college and earned a Ph.D. in Botany and Plant Ecology in 1953 from Washington State University. From 1955 to 1986, Hulbert was a Professor of Biology at Kansas State University. Internationally recognized for his research of prairie forest interactions, Hulbert served as the first director of the Konza Prairie Biological Station in Kansas (1971-1986). Hulbert died in the Bahamas on May 23, 1986.
