Kenneth G. Hance papers
Scope and Contents
The Kenneth G. Hance collection is comprised of papers from the life and work of former Michigan State University professor Kenneth G. Hance. Included in the collection are notes, papers, and other materials from phonetics and speech classes that Hance took while a student at Olivet College in the 1920s, including his Master's thesis from 1926. There are also materials from his time teaching at Albion College and University of Michigan. Also included in the collection are religious study materials from the Yokefellows International, a Christian ministry group. One item of note in the Yokefellows folder is a May 30, 1984 "Report on Homosexuality" to the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Conference. The collection also contains materials from the Central United Methodist Church of Traverse City, Michigan pertaining to work Hance did for the church.

Biographical/Historical
Kenneth G. Hance was born in Pasadena, California in 1903. In 1924, he received his B.A. from Olivet College, and in 1926 he received his M.A. from the same institution. While at Olivet, he was an instructor in English and speech from 1924-1926 and an assistant professor of English and speech from 1926-1930. Hance then began work at Albion College, working as an assistant professor of speech from 1930-1937, then later as a professor of speech from 1937-1940. He then took up the mantle of an associate professor of speech at the University of Michigan from 1940-1945. Moving to another Big Ten University, Hance worked as a professor of speech and assistant dean of the School of Speech at Northwestern University from 1945-1956. From there, he worked as professor of speech at Michigan State University from 1956-1967, acting head of the speech department in 1958, and professor of speech and theater from 1967-1970. Hance retired in 1971, and died in his St. Joseph, Michigan home in 1986.
