Biographical Note

Maria J. Patterson received her B.S. M.T. (ASCP) in 1966 from the College of St. Francis. In 1970, she received her Ph.D. in virology from Northwestern University Medical School and then spent 1971-72 at the University of Washington as a Postdoctoral Trainee. She joined the faculty of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972 in pediatrics and microbiology and molecular genetics, and specialized in the treatment of infectious diseases.

In 1984, Patterson attained her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine followed by a Pediatric Residency for Michigan State University Affiliated Hospitals for 1984-1987 and an Infectious Disease Fellowship for 1985-1986 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Maria Patterson is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Microbiology and Pediatrics at Michigan State University.

In 2008, Patterson was recognized at Michigan’s 14th Annual STD & HIV Conference and was given the lifetime achievement award for her work.
