Scope and Contents

The John W. Hanson papers pertains to Hanson’s affiliation with the University of Nigeria’s School of Education. It contains meeting minutes, notes from advisory committees, faculty meetings, and information on the curriculum established for the School of Education at the University of Nigeria, and requirements for teachers. There is one folder that contains notes on the teachers union in Nigeria. Also included in this collection are newspaper comments ranging from 1961-1965.

Also contained in the collection are some published materials, including copies of The Record, a student newspaper published by the School of Journalism at the University of Nigeria. The published materials also include published copies of the Queen’s act establishing the University. A 1961 copy of Africa Report that contains an article about Nigeria establishing a “land-grant” university is included. This article discusses MSU’s assistance with this effort. There is also a copy of "An Overview of the University of Nigeria" from 1967.

Biographical Note

John W. Hanson was a professor of Secondary Education and Curriculum at Michigan State University (MSU), from 1954 through 1980. He became a professor in the African Studies Center in 1966. He worked on the University of Nigeria Project from 1960-1962. Hanson researched education in Africa during 1965 and 1966 as part of a consortium with the University of Pittsburgh for the Agency for International Development. He researched institution building in Nigeria in 1968-1969 and was assigned to study teacher supply and demand in Africa. Hanson was affiliated with the Institute for International Studies in Education, a department of the MSU College of Education, from 1968-1980. In 1981-1982, he became part of the Administration and Curriculum Department. He retired July 1, 1982.

Hanson was born July 28, 1920. He received his B.A. in 1942 and his A.M. and Ph.D. in 1947 from the University of Illinois. He received the Distinguished Teacher award in 1960.
