Scope and Contents

The African Studies Center records contain reports for 1960-1965 on the center’s activities as well as a report on the first summer program in African languages for 1962. There are also program brochures and a program description, memo on the future of the center, and a teaching plan to eliminate racism, two issues of a student journal, and grant applications. Other materials include reports, publications and conference reports about politics and education in Africa, as well as a guide to West African pidgin English, a handbook for language study in the field, and Zimman-Zimbabwe Manpower Development Project records. Other materials include records relating to the visit of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe to Michigan State University to be given an honorary degree in 1990.

Also included is a letter from Rene (last name unknown) to the Provost about his trip to Ghana, a letter and agreement between MSU and the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies (2007-2009), a Cooperation Agreement between the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) Planning and Coordinating Agency and MSU (2011), a letter from an unidentified person to colleagues at African Studies Center suggesting changes for the department (2009), a general information packet from the Moi University Alumni Association in Kenya (2013), and Basic Statistics booklet from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (2009).

Historical Note

The African Studies Center, formerly titled the African Language and Area Center, was opened in 1960. Since 1962, it has reported to the Social Science College, and since 1963, it has reported jointly to International Studies and Programs.
