Historical Note

Prior to 1931, chemical engineering courses were taught through the Division of Engineering. The Department of Chemical Engineering was created in 1931 and then became the Department of Chemical and Metallurgy Engineering in 1944. In 1948, the two groups separated and they became the departments of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy Engineering.

In 1962, The Department of Metallurgy Engineering became the Department of Metallurgy, Mechanics and Materials Science. This was shortened to the Department of Materials Science and Mechanics in 1992. In 2001, Materials Science merged with Chemical Engineering to become the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Mechanics moved into the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
