Scope and Contents

The collection consists of brochures, teaching practice guidelines, departmental bylaws, proceedings of a conference on soils for engineers (1941) and the publication “1909-2009, 100 Years of Excellence” by Mackenzie Davis, which contains a history of the department written for its centennial.

The collection also contains William A. Bradley's teaching materials included are lantern slides and film slides of bridges around the world as well as other structures.

Annual reports (1959–1960, 1965–1969) are stored separately.

Historical Note

Established in 1909, the Department of Civil and Sanitary Engineering reported to the College of Engineering. Prior to 1909, this curriculum was taught in the Department of Mathematics and Engineering/Civil Engineering. Between 1909 and 1950, it was known as the Civil Engineering Department. In 1985, the name changed to Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

William A. Bradley (1921-1990) joined the engineering faculty in 1947. He was the recipient of the MSU Distinguished Faculty Award in 1963. He served as the acting chair of his department in 1964-1965 and 1974-1975. He was promoted to professor in 1970.
