Marching Band records
Scope and Contents
The Marching Band records contain memorabilia from the 1954 and 1956 Rose Bowl games. This collection of memorabilia was donated by alumnus Gerald Klann (class of 1928) who was associated with Oldsmobile and who accompanied the band on both trips (December 26, 1953 - January 6, 1954 and December 27, 1955 - January 7, 1956). Included in the collection are maps, train schedules, travel guides, dining car menus, Rose Bowl Game and Tournament of Roses programs and tickets, and miscellaneous travel brochures.
The records also include marching formation grids for games from 1948 to 1956, Spartan Huddle programs for 2001, 2003, 2006, a marching band media guide for 1973, and a marching band yearbook for 1996. Also incuded are Season Composites which contain the band handbook, and performance information for specific football games.
The Electronic Resources includes a video of the performance of “The Art of the March: Cues from Sun Tzu’s Art of War”, performed during the half time of the MSU vs. Maryland football game on November 14, 2015.

Historical Note
When the Michigan State College Football Team represented the Big Ten at the Rose Bowl in 1954 and 1956, the Spartan Marching Band was included in the entourage. The Oldsmobile Division of General Motors sponsored both band trips, providing a special train for the journey to California and back. The band marched in parades and played concerts in major cities along the route.
