Scope and Contents

Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) memorabilia includes a class rivalry poster (1915), seven photographs of campus depicting an elk in the campus deer park, a group of people at Lake Lansing, M.A.C. faculty/staff circa 1899-1900, R. H. Pettit in an REO automobile, and A. J. Cook at the campus apiary. There is also one letter (1954), and one newsclipping of Professor R. H. Pettit's obituary.

Biographical Note

Rufus Hiram (R. H.) Pettit was born January 11, 1869, son of Captain R. D. Pettit (a veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars.) He graduated from Baldwinsville Academy (New York) in 1887. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Cornell University in 1895 his doctorate from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1929.

He began his academic career at M.A.C. in 1897 and was the dean of the Entomology department from 1906 until his retirement in 1932.

He married Jessie A. Treat and they had 2 daughters. He died at his home in East Lansing on June 1, 1946.
