Scope and Contents

The records of the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities consist of the 1989 report, “MSU Transition Plan” detailing the removal of physical barriers to accessibility for MSU buildings. Also included are the “Personal Assistant Handbook”, and event flyer, and brochures about the Center’s services. The 1983 brochure includes an accessibility map for campus buildings.

Electronic Resources include correspondence in the form of e-mail memos.

Serial #339 contains issues of “Harbinger”, the Center’s newsletter.

Historical Note

The Office for Handicapped Student Services was created in 1972 in the Office of Special Programs although services may have existed before that time. It was administered by the Office of Special Programs from 1972-1979 and then from 1980-1992 by the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. In 1992, it was administered by the Associate Provost for Student Academic Support Services. It is currently administered by Student Affairs and Services.

In 1998, the mission of the department broadened to include services for MSU employees with disabilities. Then in July 1999, the office was renamed the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD).
